Get the most from every BackStep.

Start a project

Open Projects, choose New Project, and name whatever you are taking apart. BackStep works across electronics, computers, appliances, furniture, bicycles, photography setups, hobby equipment, displays, workplace equipment, and general household projects.

You can add an optional category, cover image, and notes. Camera permission is requested only when you actually begin Capture.

Capture and Mark Step

Keep the item visible, move slowly around important actions, and place removed parts where the camera can see them. Tap Mark Step whenever you remove, disconnect, loosen, or reposition something you will need to reverse later.

You can pause and resume a session. When you finish, BackStep saves marked timestamps, generates reference frames, and opens an editable step review.

Replay a captured moment

In the Reverse Guide or Rebuild Mode, choose Replay Clip or Show Original Moment. When the original recording is available, playback opens near the saved step timestamp so you can review exactly what happened.

If a clip is unavailable

• Open the Project Summary and confirm the original recording is still available.
• A text guide and reference frames can remain even when the source video was deleted.
• An imported project may omit media if the export did not include it.
• If the source media is missing or damaged, BackStep clearly reports that playback is unavailable instead of showing a fake clip.

When automatic analysis is unavailable

Continue with your manual marks. BackStep creates editable steps from those timestamps and can build a reverse guide without network AI. Review every generated title and instruction before rebuilding.

BackStep records and organizes your process. It does not claim that an automatically suggested label is an authoritative repair instruction.

Delete one project

Use the delete action on that project’s card or Project Summary. BackStep displays a project-specific confirmation before removing the selected project and its associated local media.

BackStep Pro

BackStep AI is free to download and includes up to three user-created projects. The sample project does not count toward this limit. BackStep Pro unlocks unlimited user-created projects, independent project duplication, Apple Vision Pro project transfer, and continuing premium workflow updates.

Restore a purchase

Open Settings → BackStep Pro → Restore App Store Purchases while signed into the Apple Account that made the purchase. Apple manages billing and subscription eligibility.

Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled through Apple subscription settings. Prices and terms are shown by Apple before purchase.

Use Apple Vision Pro

From iPhone, export a compatible .backstep project at your direction. Then import that file into BackStep on Apple Vision Pro to open its spatial guide and PartMap.

Version 1.0 does not silently upload your projects to a developer cloud service. You choose the file and destination when transferring a project.

English, Spanish, and French

BackStep supports English, Español, and Français. Change the app language from Settings → General → Language. This support site is also available in all three languages.

Safety

BackStep records your process and helps you review it. It does not replace manufacturer instructions or qualified service guidance.

Stop and seek appropriate professional guidance for high voltage, gas appliances, structural work, vehicle safety systems, medical devices, or other hazardous equipment. BackStep does not fabricate torque specifications, electrical requirements, gas procedures, or other safety-critical instructions.
